Strong Towns President Charles Marohn will be presenting in Anchorage, Alaska on February 21, 2024 to share his thoughts on the Seward to Glenn Connection PEL Study.
LOCATION: Seed Lab | DATE: February 21, 2024 | Time: 2:30 AST
Residents in the Fairview neighborhood have been working for decades to transform a dangerous, high-speed highway connection along the Gambell/Ingra Streets couplet that dissects the neighborhood. In early 2024, the Fairview Community Council and NeighborWorks Alaska are kicking off the U.S. DOT Reconnecting Communities planning project to bring community-led solutions to revitalize the corridor. This will be a multi-year process to build a public vision and the political will to finally reconnect the neighborhood.
This workshop will welcome special guest Chuck Marohn (StrongTowns.org) to lead exercises in collaboration with the Reconnecting Fairview project team to discuss and ideate potential economic development and active transportation solutions that support the Fairview neighborhood while considering community-wide use of the Gambell and Ingra corridors. The Reconnecting Fairview project is an effort to work in collaboration with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AKDOT&PF) to influence and shape the ongoing "Seward to Glenn Connection PEL."
As the Alaska DOT released the proposed Corridor Alignment alternatives in early February that include three recessed freeway routes through Fairview, a viaduct freeway along Chester Creek Greenway that bypasses Fairview, and an interim alternative that would reduce lanes from 4 to 3 on the existing couplet. The selection of an alternative is a critical step on the PEL, so we invite community members and urban design professionals to this featured workshop with urban design expert Chuck Marohn to examine the alternatives together and articulate what they might mean for East Downtown and Fairview, and how they stack up against the vision and goals for the neighborhood and Anchorage at-large. This special session is an opportunity to connect and collect input and comments for the DOT&PF planning phase and build on existing information and the future efforts of the Reconnecting Fairview project.
Please join us as we welcome Chuck who returns for this in-depth conversation to engage with our community after his participation in a walking tour of the corridor during a visit in November 2023 for the Anchorage Assembly Housing Week and Symposium, and ahead of his special public presentation on Wed. Feb 21st at 7p .
Registered professionals seeking Continuing Education credits who attend the Workshop will receive a certificate from the Anchorage Museum for 1.5 professional development hour as documentation for State of Alaska licensed landscape architects, architects, engineers and surveyors.
