In order for streets to be financially productive, they also have to be safe for people outside of an automobile. We do this by attacking and undermining the standard discourse around crashes through our Crash Analysis Studio. Today, when a crash occurs, it sets a process in motion to determine who was at fault: one driver or another? The person crossing the street or riding a bicycle? These are not the right questions, and laying blame won't stop people from making the same human mistakes again. A Crash Analysis Studio asks instead: How did the built environment cause those involved to err? Why couldn't they navigate this place safely? What can we change about this street or intersection to make it safer? When we apply these lessons to how we design and build our streets, we change everything.
