Community Revitalization Expert Majora Carter To Headline Strong Towns National Gathering

Majora Carter, keynote speaker for the 2023 Strong Towns National Gathering.

Strong Towns is thrilled to welcome urban revitalization strategist, real estate developer, and MacArthur Fellow Majora Carter as the keynote speaker for the inaugural Strong Towns National Gathering.

Born, raised, and continuously residing in the South Bronx, New York, Carter’s initiatives include pioneering sustainable economic development in her hometown through Sustainable South Bronx, Green for All, StartUp Box, and the Majora Carter Group. In 2017, she opened The Boogie Down Grind, an award-winning third space celebrating hip hop culture, community, and coffee, among other beverages.

Her philosophy, which doubles as the subtitle of her book Reclaiming Your Community, can also be found on the walls of the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture:

Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one.

The Strong Towns National Gathering begins the evening of May 30, with events continuing through May 31. Events include conversations with Strong Towns staff and fellow advocates, hands-on workshops, breakout sessions, and success stories from members and local leaders.

We know you get fired up by the stories and issues you encounter at Strong Towns, but it’s not always clear what to do next. The work of making your neighborhood stronger can often feel lonely, slow, and even discouraging. But you don’t have to stay stuck in that feeling. We know that effective advocates don’t operate on their own.

That’s why we’re excited to team up with the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) to host the Strong Towns National Gathering, to be held the day before CNU’s annual Congress begins. (And by attending the National Gathering, you have the opportunity to stay for CNU at a discounted price.)

It’s time to meet your movement!
