Every city thinks it is unique, but they're all fundamentally the same. We all have similar ordinances, similar building codes, similar road standards... and we've all financed our growth in similar ways. Thus, we're all fragile in similar ways.
This video is the introduction to a series about why our towns are going broke—despite lots of growth—and how they can build toward a stronger, more prosperous future. We call it the Curbside Chat. We’ve been living for decades on the urban economic equivalent of anabolic steroids: it’s time for some good old-fashioned diet and exercise. The key is to reorient the way we approach growth. Instead of thinning out our cities and taking on more infrastructure liabilities, we need to wring real value out of the places we’ve already built.
